What Parents Should Know

Figuring out where your child should study is a big decision. This page is designed to help parents make the right choice. Take some time and read through it.

  1. Is there work in the music industry?
Let’s quickly go through a few options that your child could look at if they want to build a career in the music industry after studying with us.

First off you need to understand that the music industry is a very large industry that is split up into many parts. On the one side you have the live sound industry. For example when you go to a venue to watch your favorite artist or band perform, they are professional audio engineers working on the show.

Another example of live sound would be going to see a play at the theater. These are all places where our students could start their careers.Think of all the live venues around South Africa where you can go see some kind of live performance. These venues are opportunities for our students.T

he other opportunity in live sound is to work for sound companies. These companies are often hired by the venues to handle the sound system and all the setup for the event. Many sound engineers build careers in that sector of the live sound industry.

Then we get to the broadcasting side of the music industry. This of course includes radio and television. Just switch on your TV and count how many channels DSTV has at the moment. A lot of those channels operate as completely separate companies and they all need audio professionals.

Think of it this way. Wherever you see video, you will always have audio alongside it. So apart from their video professionals, these companies also need their audio professionals.

These are just a few options to keep in mind when researching the different career opportunities in the music industry.

  2. Will you let me know how my child is doing?
We keep track of how all our learners are doing and communicate with their parents when we see any red flags. We want them to make the best of the time they are with us to make sure that they have a productive time while studying with us.We also encourage the parents of our students to call us regularly to check if their child is still on track.
  3. Do we need to purchase anything extra?
We have invested in getting all the equipment and tools that our students need. This means that you don’t need to budget for any extra purchases. And we make sure that all our students get the practical sessions that they need to hone their skills on the equipment.

If you want to purchase extra resources for your child during their year with us, we will also be able to help recommend the right tools so that you don’t end up wasting money on something useless.

  4.  Are you an accredited college?
Yes. We are fully accredited by MICT SETA under SAQA.SAQA is the South African Qualifications Authority and MICT SETA is the branch that specializes in the audio industry. Our MICT SETA is accreditation number is ACC/2012/01/895.
  5. Is the course accredited?Yes.
The qualification that we offer our students is a fully accredited SAQA qualification. The qualification number is 48671.
  6. Will my child receive the accredited certificate?
As per the rules of MICT SETA only students that have successfully completed Matric, Grade 12 can qualify for the accredited certificate. Students that do qualify must be found competent on every assessment they have during the year.

If you do not qualify for the accredited certificate, you will automatically receive the CAE Audio Engineering Certificate that is backed by CAE College of Audio Engineering. We have been in the industry for 19 years and have built up a reputation in the field. So any student that has this certificate can with confidence approach a prospective employer with the CAE certificate.

Through the years we have found that we get calls from prospective employers about past students and it is not so that they can find out what the student studied while they were with us. Instead they are simply trying to verify that the student did in fact study with us. This is the case because the industry already knows the quality of our students.

  7. How long has CAE been operational?
We have been operating for the last 19 years. In short, we aren’t going anywhere.
  8. Do you have class every day of the week?
Yes. Class times run from Monday to Friday every week.
Class starts 9AM and ends at 12PM every day.
  9. Do they get practical time to learn the practical skills needed to succeed?
From 12 we have practical sessions booked for students to sharpen their skills on the audio equipment and tools.
  10. Will knowledgeable staff be available to assist my child during those practical sessions?
Yes. We have an open door approach to how we do things at CAE. Someone that has a deep knowledge of the tools that the students are practicing on is always close by. It is just a matter of the student coming to get us and show us what they are struggling with.
  11. Will my child be writing exams?
Yes. We have a theory exam at the end of every term. We also have practical assessments that take place throughout the year.
  12. Will the college get my child a job after the course?
We can’t in good conscience promise our students something that we cannot deliver. We can tell you what you want to hear but at the end of the day it is still not the truth.

The students that go on to become successful in the music industry are always the ones that get up and get themselves out into the industry. Sitting around and waiting for the phone to ring is not going to bring them the results they are looking for.We always say that we can only do 50% for their careers. They still have to put in their 50% to make a success of their lives.

  13. What should my child bring to the table to succeed in the music industry?
The right attitude. Being willing to start at the bottom is a big factor in achieving the goals they have. As with all professions you have to pay your dues as they say.

Dedication to their own success. This includes basic things like being punctual every day. Being in class everyday. Staying until the class is finished everyday and of course doing the work that they need to do.If you have any more questions or concerns please feel free to contact us.
